As a wave travels between two points in a medium, it transfers ____.

wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one point to another. Waves that transfer energy through a medium are called mechanical waves.

There are two types of mechanical waves:

Longitudinal (Compression) Waves: particle displacement is parallel to the direction of wave propagation. Examples:

  • Sound Waves: Energy is transferred through the medium of air or water.

  • Spring Oscillations: Energy is transferred through the medium of the spring.

  • Seismic (primary) Wave: Energy is transferred through the medium of the ground.

Transverse Waves: particle displacement is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. Examples:

  • String Vibrations: Energy is transferred through the medium of the string.

  • Audience Wave: Energy is transferred through a medium composed of the arms and bodies of the people involved in the wave.

  • Seismic (secondary) Wave: Energy is transferred through the medium of the ground.
