I believe that you are asking about section 5, which begins with chapter 32. Connor and Risa have made their way to the Graveyard. It is in the Arizona desert, and it is a graveyard for old aircraft. The aircraft are striped of their usable parts, and those parts are sold for a profit. The entire Graveyard is run by the admiral, and he uses it as a safe haven for runaway Unwinds. The only catch is that any Unwind who wishes to stay must work, which is stated in rule #6.
#6) EVERYONE IN THE GRAVEYARD CONTRIBUTES. NO EXCEPTIONS.
The real work in the yard is done by the Unwinds. There are whole teams specially designated to strip the jets, sort parts, and get them ready for sale. It's just like any other junkyard, but on a larger scale.
Here are some of the jobs available for Unwinds at the Graveyard.
- Stripping jets for parts.
- Sorting parts for sale.
- Galley workers. These are the cooks and the dishwashers. This is where Risa is originally assigned.
- Medic. This is what Risa is quickly promoted to.
- Trash crew. This is what Connor is first assigned.
- Repair crew. This is what Connor is promoted to after he displays a propensity for fixing things.
- Pilot's assistant. This is the job Roland acquires.
Every once in a while, the Unwinds are given the chance for a job outside of the Graveyard. It's risky, because the Unwind risks discovery by law enforcement. The reward though is a brand new identity that shows the Unwind is 18 years old. The two jobs that were offered during the book in this work category were forest clear cutting and house cleaning.
